Speed Control of AC Servo Motor in a Metal Industry using PI controller

Abstract:
AC Servo motors have numerous applications in the area of positioning control & fast precise response. One of the major application of AC servo motor is in metal industry. Because of fast position control & high performance of PM type AC Servo Motor, most of the drive in a metal industry is equipped with PMSM control loop. Conventional AC Servo motor drive usually have PID type controller. But with the increase in speed control range & accurate position response demand, this type of controller may not give satisfactory response specially when it is used for low speed control. Therefore the tuning of PI parameter used in this drive is very necessary. This paper presents self tuning scheme for PI controller in AC servo motor using field oriented control. Motor used in servo motor here is Permanent magnet Synchronous Motor. In field oriented control d-axis reference current is taken as zero. The main focus is on controlling speed of synchronous motor with permanent magnet. The performance of this scheme is tested using MATLAB/ SIMULINK Software.
