| Abstract: | ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Azathioprine is a cytotoxic drug used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. The most common adverse effect of azathioprine is myelosuppression. The side effects of azathioprine may be either allergic, non- dose related such as fever, rashes or non- allergic dose related such as leucopenia. DISCUSSION: A 22 years old male, known Crohn’s disease for last 5 months, has dyspnea and palpitations. He had been on azathioprine and prednisolone and well controlled. At present, he developed dyspnea and palpitations. He consulted the physician and diagnosis was azathioprine induced myelosuppression. Blood transfusion was done in order to manage the condition. CONCLUSION: Immunosuppressant drug azathioprine has a significant potential for adverse reactions such as bone marrow suppression. Frequent blood count monitoring is recommended for patients with azathioprine therapy. |
