Abstract:
In recent years, the installed capacity of wind energy conversion system (WECS) has increased exponentially. The DC-link capacitor voltage rises during Low voltage ride through (LVRT) due to the reduction of active power transferred to the grid. Voltage dip causes WECS to isolate from the grid in order to protect its equipment from damage due to the flow of high current. Modern grid codes demand that during LVRT, WECS should remain connected to the grid and stay operational. In addition, it should inject reactive power to support the grid voltage and to reduce the possibility of voltage collapse. In this paper, a control strategy is developed to reduce the overvoltage of the DC-link capacitor by using braking chopper and reactive power is injected into the grid to enhance the LVRT capability of permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based WECS. This strategy is simple, fast acting and less expensive compared to other LVRT enhancement methods. Simulation of a 2 MW grid connected PMSG based WECS is carried out in Matlab/simulink to validate the system performance.
