Abstract: Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) impacts negatively the physical, psychological, social, and environmental well-being of patients. The impact affects the Quality of Life (QoL) of the patients. Using the World Health Organization-BREF questionnaire, this study is aimed at evaluating the QoL of DM subjects and comparing it with controls without any form of chronic illness. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional, and comparative study involving subjects living with DM and healthy controls. WHOQOL-BREF, an interviewer-administered questionnaire, was administered to all participants after signing the consent form. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26.0 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences, Inc., Chicago, Ill). The continuous variables were given as means± standard deviation (SD). P-value was considered statistically significant when at P≤ 0.05 Results: A total of three hundred and six (306) participants were recruited consisting of two hundred and fifty-six (256) DM participants (cases) and fifty (50) controls who had no DM, nor any other chronic disease. DM group had lower quality of life compared with the control group with no chronic illness. Conclusions: DM group had lower quality of life compared with a control group with no chronic illness. QoL is better in the male DM group than in female DM participants and better in female controls than in the female DM group.
