Biological samples represent analysis challenges due to the presence of interfering constituents within the sample matrix. contaminants in these complex samples may clog sampling and extraction devices, non specifically interact with analyte, coextract with target compounds and/ or foul instrumentation through adsorption. Adding to the difficuly, the sample matrix often contains only trace levels of analyte that require a form of proconcentration or purification in order to deliver a sufficient quantity of target compound to the analytical instruments. Because of the low preconcentration factors and extensive use of toxic organic solvents, there has been a growing need to displace them with alternative approaches. The bioanalytical sample preparation is step in the bioanalytical process typically consist of an extraction procedure that results in the isolation and enrichment of compoenants (analyte / metabolite) of interest from a biological matrix (e.g., plasma, urine, skin, saliva etc). These feature article highlights a selection of sample preparation techniques and important recent advances that have significant impact in the life sciences and pharmaceutical industry.
