The most serious side effect of corticosteroid use is hypertension, which must be taken into consideration when choosing a patient's course of treatment because it increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and other complications. Numerous illnesses are treated with corticosteroid medications, also referred to as steroids or anti-inflammatory drugs. They are not the same as anabolic steroids, which some individuals frequently use illegally to add muscle mass. Systemic corticosteroids have significant risks despite being crucial in the management of many inflammatory and immunologic diseases. The more serious side effects of systemic corticosteroid therapy include osteoporosis, adrenal suppression, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease, Cushing's syndrome, psychological disorders, and immunosuppression, especially when given in high doses for extended periods of time. This comprehensive paper covers these adverse events and provides useful guidelines for their prevention and management, based on both the most recent research and the authors' clinical experience.
