Abstract

Aim: To review the methods of isolation, transportation and culture of Tannerella forsythia - an obligate anaerobic periodontal pathogen. Background: Gram negative obligate anaerobic bacilli are the most putative periodontal pathogens which are responsible for destructive periodontal disease. To date, microbiological culture method is one of the most broadly used tools for microbiological identification and is considered a ‘gold standard’ because of its ability to detect the bacterial species and to test their susceptibility to antibiotic agents. One such periodontal pathogen that has notoriously fastidious growth requirements is Tannerella forsythia. Identification of the ideal nutritive factors which promote the growth of this organism is still considered a challenge in laboratories with basic amenities. Reason: Ideal methods of isolation, transportation and cultivation of the organisms help in providing an accuracy in determining the requirements for growth and the characteristics of the organism.
