Print, Language, and Nationalism: Emergence of Regional Print Publics in Late-Colonial India

The emergence of print culture in late-colonial India played a transformative role in shaping linguistic identities and fostering nationalist consciousness. This chapter examines how the proliferation of print in vernacular languages contributed to the formation of regional print publics and their eventual integration into broader nationalist discourse. Drawing on the concept of “print capitalism,” it argues that the expansion of newspapers, journals, pamphlets, and literary texts in Indian languages enabled the creation of imagined communities and facilitated political mobilization. The study highlights the dual role of print as both a medium of colonial governance and a tool of anti-colonial resistance. While regional print publics strengthened linguistic identities, they also provided the cultural foundation for Indian nationalism. However, these developments were not without contradictions, as print also contributed to communal and regional divisions. The chapter concludes that the interplay of print, language, and nationalism was central to the making of modern India.
