Abstract:
Citrus belongs to family Rutaceae and sub-family Aurantioideae. It is considered to be the third most important fruit crop in India which has been distributed in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. North-east region is considered to be a major citrus growing zone as this region alone produces 7,91,000.36 metric tons of citrus crop annually as per record of Government of Assam (2012-13). More than 250 species of insects are reported in citrus ecosystem. Out of these, 42 species are more common in North-Eastern region. Anoplophora versteegi, the trunk borer, is the major pest of citrus in the region. Diaphorina citri, the citrus psylla and Toxoptera aurantii as well as Toxoptera citricidus, the black aphids, are found causing citrus greening and citrus tristeza respectively in lower and mid hill of the region. Phyllocnistis citrella (leaf miner) is also known to damage the nursery and plants during each new flush. Rhynchocoris humeralis (fruit sucking bug) is a serious pest more predominant recorded from Mizoram. Some other important citrus pests are: looper, mealybug, scales, bird eating caterpillar, fruit sucking moth, lemon butterfly, tobacco caterpillar, leaf mining beetle, leaf folder etc. The commercially important citrus cultivation has been damaged in different level by some insect pests which is one of the major constraints to reduce the production of citrus crops, thereby contributing to a great economic loss to our country. The objective of this study is to identify various types of insects that attack Assam lemon (Citrus limon L.Burm) so that the major pest can be identified and find out a way to stop the destruction of citrus plants by controlling the insect pests without causing any harm to the environment. In 1 year study conducted in the Maanipur area of Morigaon, Assam, India, from January 2021 to December 2021, 8 insect pests and 2 mite species were recorded from the citrus tree of Assam lemon (Citrus limon L.Burm). Besides, 2 species of spiders have also been recorded as natural enemies from the citrus plants. This was the first ever study in the Maanipur region of Morigaon, Assam, India.
