Rise of Naxalism and Leftist Movement in India

The rise of Naxalism and the Leftist movement in India represents one of the most significant internal security challenges since independence. Originating in the late 1960s in rural West Bengal, the movement was rooted in agrarian discontent, socio-economic inequalities, and perceived state neglect. This paper examines the historical evolution, ideological foundations, and expansion of the Naxalite movement across various Indian states. It explores the structural causes such as land alienation, tribal marginalization, and uneven development, which have contributed to its persistence. The study also evaluates the state’s responses, including both security-based and developmental strategies. Through qualitative analysis supported by secondary data, the paper highlights the geographical spread and intensity of Left-Wing Extremism (LWE). The findings indicate that while the movement has declined in recent years due to coordinated government action, underlying socio-economic grievances continue to pose risks. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for a balanced approach combining governance reforms, inclusive development, and security measures to address the root causes of insurgency.
