Abstract

This study investigated the effect of lemongrass essential oil (LEO) nanoemulsion coatings on the shelf life of tomatoes. Two concentrations (0.5% and 1.0%) were prepared in a pectin-based matrix and applied by dipping for varying durations. The coated fruits were evaluated for spoilage, physiological loss in weight (PLW%), firmness, lycopene content, and redness during storage under ambient conditions. Both coatings effectively reduced spoilage and weight loss, maintained firmness, and delayed ripening compared to the control. Among treatments, 0.5% LEO nanoemulsion with longer dipping times provided the best preservation, extending tomato shelf life while retaining quality attributes. These findings suggest that LEO nanoemulsion is a safe, natural, and eco-friendly approach for reducing postharvest losses in tomatoes.
