Abstract

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has transformed India’s digital payment landscape by enabling fast, secure, and interoperable real-time transactions. This study examines consumer awareness and satisfaction with UPI, focusing on its usability, security, convenience, and comparative advantages over traditional payment methods. The research also explores factors influencing consumer perception and adoption of UPI across different demographic groups. The study adopts a descriptive research design and is based on primary data collected through a structured questionnaire administered to UPI users, including students and employees. Qualitative and descriptive analytical techniques are used to assess levels of awareness, satisfaction, usage patterns, and challenges associated with UPI adoption. Key determinants such as transaction speed, ease of use, interoperability, cost efficiency, and security features are evaluated. The findings reveal a high level of consumer awareness and overall satisfaction with UPI, driven primarily by its convenience, real-time settlement, and widespread merchant acceptance. The study also identifies persistent challenges, including technical glitches, security concerns, and limited digital literacy among certain user segments. Despite these issues, UPI is increasingly preferred over traditional payment systems, indicating a structural shift towards cashless transactions. The study concludes that UPI has played a crucial role in strengthening India’s digital payment ecosystem and advancing financial inclusion. The findings offer policy-relevant insights for regulators, banks, and payment service providers to improve system reliability, enhance security frameworks, and promote inclusive digital financial adoption
